Last June we completed a new technical tour. The chosen destination in this opportunity was the Rhone Valley in France, same wine region we had already chosen for our technical tour of 2012. However, we thought it would be positive to update our knowledge, taking into account the projects we are developing that link us to the Rhone.

These include: our Syrah project in Aconcagua Costa, whose vineyards are planted on metamorphic rock (schists), the same soils found in Côte-Rôtie AOC, where some of the best examples of Syrah in the world come from; our work with Viognier, grape variety that is crafted with master skills in Condrieu; and our projects with Marsanne and Roussanne, two white varieties produced in some areas of the Rhone.

For a week, we visited the appellations of Côte-Rôtie (Côte Brune, which, like Aconcagua Costa, also has schist soils) and Côte Blonde; Condrieu, home of the best Viognier wines in the world; Saint Joseph, Cornas, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint Peray (in this last appeallation is where the aforementioned Marsanne and Roussanne shine). In each of these appeallations we visites the most emblematic producers: Alain Graillot, of Crozes-Hermitage; André Perret (Condrieu), Auguste Clape (Cornas), Ogier, Rostaing and Guigal (Côte – Rôtie).

Among the highlights and practices that caught our attention, we can mention:
– The sustainable management of the vineyards, avoiding the use of herbicides and fertilizers, which is remarkable considering the adverse conditions of the topography. All the work in the vineyard is done by hand.
– The use of stem in the vinification process by some producers
– Use of foudres, barrels of 600 liters and, in general, recipients for ageing of bigger volumes.
– The different wine styles or wine tipicities associated to each appellation, qualities that we could clearly perceive.
