Wine critic and editor for Vinous, Josh Raynolds, released in February his latest report entitled New Releases from Chile. In it, the two top scored from all wines tasted for this report were Viñedo Chadwick 2014 and Kai Carmenere 2014. Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2014 and Chardonnay 2014 were also highlighted on the report, referring to this last wine as “one of the most impressive Chardonnays from Chile that I can recall”. Of his Top 10 wines rated, six belong to Viña Errázuriz, achieving an outstanding performance.

The wines tasted by Josh Raynolds with their scores and reviews are detailed below:

Kai 2014, 95 puntos

Inky purple. Expressive mineral- and spice-accented blackberry, cherry compote, vanilla and oral pastille aromas are complemented by hints of cola and toasty oak. Sappy, concentrated and precise on the palate, offering intense, spice-accented black and blue fruit, candied violet and cola flavors braced by an undercurrent of smoky minerality. Youthfully chewy tannins sneak in very slowly and fold seamlessly into the energetic fruit, which clings with superb tenacity on the fruit- and floral-driven finish. I find this wine’s character more northern Rhône- than Bordeaux-like right now.”

Kai 2013, 94 puntos

“Saturated ruby. Pungent red and dark berry scents are complemented by suggestions of underbrush, mocha and five-spice powder, and a zesty mineral element adds lift. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, offering spice-tinged black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suave touch of lavender pastille. Silky tannins frame the impressively long, focused finish, where the floral and spice notes echo emphatically.”

La Cumbre 2014, 93 puntos

“Dark purple. Potent black and blue fruit, candied licorice and cola scents are lifted and sharpened by peppery spice and smoky mineral notes. Coats the palate with sweet blackberry, cherry liqueur and mocha flavors that stretch out and become more energetic with aeration. Shows pliant, seamless texture and finishes extremely long and spicy, smooth tannins building slowly and folding effortlessly into the concentrated dark fruit.”

Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve 2013, 93 puntos

“Bright purple. Expansive aromas of black currant, cherry liqueur, vanilla, cured tobacco and black pepper, backed by a hint of smokiness. Supple, sweet and broad, offering palate-coating black and blue fruit and violet pastille flavors and a touch of candied licorice that comes up slowly with air. Plenty rich, but there’s real vivacity here as well. Closes on a suave floral note, with excellent clarity and smooth tannins lending gentle grip. In the category of high-end, Bordeaux-inspired red wines from Chile, this one delivers outstanding value.”

Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2014, 93 puntos

Vivid red. Heady red berry liqueur, cola and Asian spice aromas, along with suggestions of candied rose and incense. Sweet and penetrating in the mouth, offering intense, spice- and mineral-accented raspberry, cherry and spicecake flavors and a refreshingly bitter hint of blood orange. Silky tannins build slowly and fold effortlessly into the wine’s energetic fruit on a strikingly long, sweet finish that shows excellent clarity. Not many Chilean Pinots of my experience can match up to this beauty.”

Aconcagua Costa Sauvignon Blanc 2015, 92 puntos

“Brilliant straw. High-pitched, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complicated by suggestions of lemongrass and fennel. Fleshy, deeply concentrated pear and Meyer lemon flavors display a bitter edge of quinine and offer impressive palate coverage. Juicy and light on its feet, offering vibrant lime, green apple and ginger flavors that show very good delineation. Closes spicy, smooth and very long, leaving bitter pear skin and succulent herb notes behind.”

Silky, penetrating and precise, offering an array of sharply focused citrus and pit fruit flavors given lift and spine by a dusty mineral quality. A subtle floral note comes up on the nervy, persistent finish, which leaves behind a juicy Meyer lemon note. This wine has a fairly low pH of 3.2, which shows in its vibrancy.”

Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2015, 91 puntos

“Brilliant ruby-red. A complex bouquet evokes fresh red berries, potpourri and incense, and zesty mineral quality adds lift. Lively, mineral-accented red currant, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors pick up a spicy flourish with air and show a nervy, tightly focused quality. Unfurls slowly with aeration, gaining depth and finishing with very good definition and sappy, red fruit- ominated persistence.”
